Install the WATCHER application software on your Macintosh. You may also want to install software tools included with WATCHER on other Macintoshes in your network. (These tools are described in this chapter.)
WATCHER can run on any Macintosh with at least 4 MB of RAM, with a recommendation of 8MB, and at least 2 MB of free hard disk space. It can operate over LocalTalk, Ethernet, or any other cabling and transmission scheme you use.
We recommend that the Macintosh running WATCHER should have System 7.5.3 or later and OpenTransport 1.1 (some features only work with OT 1.1), although System 7.1 will work with MacTCP 2.0.6 or later.
1. Insert the WATCHER diskette and double-click the icon to display its contents.
2. Double-click the compressed WATCHER file to install WATCHER on your hard drive. Select a location for WATCHER using the dialog box that appears.
3. Once installed on your hard drive, the files appear in a folder called WATCHER v4.1.
You may need to perform additional installations to provide support
for different network environments, features, and notifications. These
steps are described here.
To support Internet device monitoring:
1. Make sure you have MacTCPô version 2.0.6 or later installed on the Macintosh running WATCHER. If you are running WATCHER on a Mac SE, Mac Plus, Mac Portable, or PowerBook 100, you must have MacTCP version 2.0.6 or OpenTransport (OT) version 1.1 installed.
Note: You can purchase MacTCP/OT directly from Apple, or through APDA.
2. MacTCP/OT must be configured correctly for your environment. Refer to the MacTCP Administrator's Guide or the OpenTransport User Guide for more information.
To support DECnet device monitoring, you need to have DECnet/Mac version 1.1 or later installed on your Macintosh.
To support Novell IPX device monitoring, you need to have MacIPXô version 1.0 or later installed on your Macintosh.
MacIPX has been included with WATCHER. To install it, drag it from the Tools folder inside the WATCHER v4.1 folder and drop it into your System Folder. Restart your Macintosh and configure MacIPX. The appendix at the back of this guide provides instructions to help you.
To support SNMP enhanced monitoring of Internet devices, make sure you have satisfied the requirements for Internet support. There are no additional requirements.
Your Macintosh can speak to you, phonetically "voicing" notification messages. If you want spoken notifications, install MacinTalk on your Macintosh by dragging its icon from the Tools folder inside the WATCHER v4.1 folder, and dropping it into your System Folder. |
Note: MacinTalk version 2 or 3 must be installed on the Macintosh. It is included in version 7.5.3.
WATCHER can notify you of device failures and recoveries by placing a call to a pager or to another computer. To support this feature, you need to install a modem on your Macintosh, or make use of a shared network modem like Shiva's NetModemô. |
Note: The network connection between your Macintosh and a shared network modem could fail. If you use a network modem, make sure that you assign on-screen or sound notifications to that part of the network once you start using WATCHER.
You also need to configure a script to place calls. The script tells your Macintosh how to dial calls and communicate with paging companies and other computers. (Refer to the section Creating Pager/Modem Scripts in the chapter Creating Notifications.)
Most paging companies use IXO protocol, which is WATCHER's default pager script. WATCHER also comes with a variety of other paging scripts. When defining a script, refer to the Paging Services document in the WATCHER v4.1 folder for additional information.
WATCHER can use various electronic mail systems to notify you of device failures or recoveries. This section describes the installation required to support notifications by QuickMail, MS-Mail, POWERTALK mail and SMTP mail.
To have notifications sent by QuickMail, you must have QuickMail client software, version 2.5 or higher installed on your Macintosh.
Follow these steps:
1. Drag the QuickMessenger file from the Tools folder inside the WATCHER v4.1 folder, and drop it into your System Folder.
2. Restart your Macintosh.
3. Connect to your QuickMail server using the QuickMail desk accessory. You need to do this only once before launching WATCHER.
To have notifications sent by Microsoft Mail (MS-Mail), you must have MS-Mail software version 3.0 or higher installed on your Macintosh.
To have notifications sent by Apple Open Collaborative Environment (PowerTalk) mail, you must have System 7.1 or higher, and PowerTalk installed on your Macintosh. Enter all addresses you want to use for notifications into your PowerTalk Personal Directory.
To have notifications sent by simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) mail, you must have MacTCP/OT installed on your Macintosh. (For more information on MacTCP requirements, see Internet Support earlier in this chapter.)
Some network devices may require configuration to support WATCHER monitoring and polling. These devices include Macintosh computers and devices supporting SNMP.
An SNMP agent must be installed on each device you want to monitor using WATCHER's enhanced SNMP capabilities. Many devices, such as routers and bridges, have built-in SNMP agents. Please refer to the documentation that was provided with your network devices.
To ensure that WATCHER's polling and configuration reporting functions are supported, check each Macintosh you want to monitor:
Type a unique name into the Sharing Setup control panel of each Macintosh. This is the name that will appear in the WATCHER main test list.
If you want enhanced reporting of Macintosh configuration information, install the WATCHER Responder. (This does not replace the Responder already present in the System Folder.)
1. Find the WATCHER Responder in the Tools folder, inside the WATCHER v4.1 folder on the Macintosh running WATCHER.
2. Copy WATCHER Responder onto a floppy disk.
3. Drag WATCHER Responder from the floppy disk and drop it into the System Folder of each Macintosh to be monitored.
4. Restart each Macintosh.
WATCHER can monitor any hard disk mounted on a Macintosh desktop, including Macintosh and non-Macintosh AppleShare compatible server disks (available through the Chooser). |
If you want to monitor Macintosh disk space, install the Space Probe control panel. Follow these steps:
1. Find the Space Probe control panel in the Tools folder, inside the WATCHER v4.1 folder on the Macintosh running WATCHER.
2. Copy the control panel onto a floppy disk.
3. Drag the Space Probe control panel from the floppy disk and drop it into the System Folder of each Macintosh to be monitored.
4. Open the control panel and select each volume you want to monitor by clicking on it in the Installed Volumes list. (See Figure 3-1.)
Figure 3-1 Space Probe control panel
5. Adjust the disk space threshold by clicking on the pointer under the control panel's disk space bar, and sliding it to the left or the right. When the percentage of disk space used on any monitored volume goes above the disk space threshold, the device is shown as Down, and you may be notified.
6. Restart each Macintosh.
For more information about using Space Probe and monitoring disk space, see Testing Devices.
